Sometimes things in life are obvious….

See, you didn’t need me to tell you, you already knew.

Sometimes a little reinforcement helps:

Don’t slow Down to Save Your Back, Exercise Instead– Alexander P. Hughes M.D.

Take Home: increased activity is a key protector of your spine, and by far the best prescription for back health is maintaining an active lifestyle.”

and more: Bed rest for acute low-back pain and Sciatica– Hagen, KB

advice to rest in bed is less effective than advice to stay active.”

Let’s face it, you knew that lying around, doing nothing wasn’t good for you. Seriously, let’s have all the structures, muscles, ligaments and tendons that help support and buttress the forces on my spine (which hurts) get weak and immobile….and of course my back will feel better when I go do anything…that makes sense..

Not really: Prolonged bed rest decreases skeletal muscle and whole body protein synthesis– A.A. Ferrando

The only reason it feels better while you rest is because YOU ARE LYING DOWN….almost all of the forces the spine normally has on it, even from just standing, are almost completely removed.

The whole “bed rest” thing is really going the way of the Dinosaur…

Labor of Love: Physically Active Moms-To-Be Give Babies a Head Start on Heart Health

Bed rest can harm, instead of  Help in Pregnancy Complications Research Suggests

Our next DUHHHHHHHHH of the day….Crunches…… Pretty much suck all over. Not only, might they ruin your back but they don’t do anything for fat loss.

Literally nothing: The Effect of Abdominal Exercise on Abdominal Fat– Vispute, Sachin

“Six weeks of abdominal exercise training alone was not sufficient to reduce abdominal subcutaneous fat and other measures of body composition.”

I don’t know how many crunches it would take to burn a pound of fat (the article says 250,000) but it doesn’t really matter, it would be A LOT times 10….

A Lifetime of Physical Activity Yields Measurable Benefits as We Age– Rachel Cooper

Really, that’s the title….

“physical activity across adulthood would have beneficial effects on physical performance later in life and hence the functional health and quality of life of the aging population”

Thanks Dr. Obvious Ph.D

See sometimes we know things….but could use a little reinforcement.

Well, Duhhhh

Celebrites use Steroids…OMG!

August 29, 2011 Leave a comment

Did you know it’s really hard to gain 20lbs of pure muscle in a year without pharmaceutical help? Let alone in a few months but Hollywood types do it all the time…..

Over a few months in 2010, Momoa, a 6-foot-4-inch Hawaiian actor and model, added about 30 pounds of muscle to his 205-pound frame”- Rebecca Keegan, Muscle Summer- the men of ‘Captain America’, ‘Thor’ and ‘Conan’

BADASS, steroids or not

clean as a whistle….

or so we thought, or actually, YOU thought…cause they said crap like, “I workout 5-6 hrs a day and eat 8-10 meals a day and use copious amounts of anabolics” and you believe whatever you’re told because they would obviously openly incriminate not only themselves but also those involved with them and raise the alarm to local and federal agencies that illicit drug use was knowingly and openly going on……cause I seem to remember how well that worked out for MLB..

Barry Bonds HGH Bucket head bobble head anyone?

Only available to the first 10,000 fans!... who let Rafi Palmerio shoot Vitamin B in their ass

“For “Fast Five,” Johnson packed back on the muscle. To reach a filming weight of 280 pounds — or, in action hero math, 1.5 Clint Eastwoods — the actor said he ate 6,000 to 8,000 calories a day and followed his regular iron-pumping regimen of “sweat, spit and sometimes training so hard I throw up a little bit in my mouth.” Johnson said he also took a daily multivitamin and glutamine, a supplement that aids in muscle recovery after workouts.”- Rebecca Keegan

Dude, you don’t weigh 280lbs because of a multivitamin and some glutamine….seriously?

Those of us who are sceptics, or actually lift weights and don’t believe the news  hype in TMZ, US Weekly, People etc. Thought about that load of crap and said, “Damn pro body builders are the size of a freaking silver back gorilla’s and they use a tons of steroids and don’t gain 20lbs of pure muscle in a year and their freaking JOB is to be Mr. McMuscle”. …..

So it seems somebody did some juice for a job didn’t get it and now he’s blowing the whistle…

Now, you’re probably thinking, “It’s someone really famous, this is good dirt”….or “this is some major action star”….or “Dolph Lundgren is pissed off, way to go”….

annnnd…you’d be wrong. It was that little shit from Baywatch….and not the Hoff..

this guy:

Yep, a juicehead, Snookie would be proud…
“Baywatch Star/ ‘Conan the Barbarian’ reject says PED use is “very common”
“It’s more than just sports,” said Victor Conte, former head of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO), who supplied Jones and other athletes with steroids. “Rappers are doing this. They’re all ripping their shirts off with six-pack [abdominal muscles]. In mainstream movies and action hero type stuff, it’s rampant.

I’ll see photos of these guys. You can tell in a heartbeat if they’re using. Guys just don’t all of a sudden put on 25 pounds of muscle in two months for a movie role. And it’s not going to happen just from growth hormone. You’re using testosterone or some derivative of an anabolic steroid.” Hruby

Damn, a guy that made steroids is in prison for it and was at the center of the largest steroid controversy maybe ever thinks these guys are juicing….ummm yeah, something must be up.

“A casting call this year for an upcoming “Wonder Woman” television series reportedly sought “super-buff, worked-out, bodybuilder-type guys to play soldiers that appear to be on steroids.”-Hruby

Appear to be on steroids???????? WTF?

"appear to be on steroids"

Golf Training or Ringling Bros. ?

What the hell is this about?

Stupid Human Tricks

Someone please explain to me what standing on a stability ball with a golf club is supposed to do. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Let’s use some logic and THINK about this…..

Q: Is it sport specific?

A: No, it’s not. When you play golf…THE GROUND DOESN’T MOVE!…so why would be practice on a ball which does?

Q: Does this mimic the golf swing in appearance?

A: No, Look at his feet… the ankle joint has changed which means the activation patterns across it as well as the knee and hip and through the spine (core) and shoulder girdle..i.e. The ENTIRE KINETIC CHAIN has changed….Therefore, the swing MUST be different in some aspect.

Q: Does it mimic the speed of movement?

A: No, it can’t,  with an increasing level of instability the primary movers must contribute MORE to stabilization and less to power/ strength/ speed production.

“When a muscle contracts, it creates both force and stiffness. Force creates joint torque to support postures and create movement — but sometimes the force will enhance joint stability and sometimes it will compromise stability. It depends on the magnitude of the force and its relative magnitude relative to all other muscle forces acting at the joint. In contrast, muscle stiffness is always stabilizing. A stiff muscle buttresses against perturbations from all directions. Stiffness at one joint buttresses the development of explosive power at another. Stiffness is also enhanced by positional techniques of the body segment linkage where one segment can be stiffened against another……..

high performance in athletics requires rapid muscle activation onset and force development, together with equally rapid reduction of muscle force. Super stiffness needs only to occur briefly in such cases, but if it needs to be brief, the motor control system must be highly tuned to ensure optimal super stiffness.”,  Dr. Stuart McGill – Superstiffness

Therefore it’s obvisous that cheap parlor tricks that “work the core” or anything else for that matter while under the guise of being , I hate this term, “sport specific” are just that….cheap parlor tricks….

Golfers need to be able to create power and stiffness….. tension and relaxation quickly and with a highly developed degree of motor control. Foolish exercises like standing on a physioball and swinging a golf club DO NOT ALLOW FOR THIS! These types of exercises fundamentally change the movements and therefore the training effect. In general unstable surfaces, for heatlhy athletes and appllied to lower body training,  impair athletic performance.

“These results indicate that UST (unstable surface training) using inflatable rubber discs attenuates performance improvements in healthy, trained athletes. Such implements have proved valuable in rehabilitation, but caution should be exercised when applying UST to athletic performance and general exercise scenarios.”- Cressey

The Effects of 10 Weeks of Lower-Body Unstable Surface Training on Markers of Athletic PerformanceCressey

So what does standing on a physioball add to the training of any golfer?

Yep, it’s just another stupid thing to try and sell some myth that successful training for sports requires some special equipment and esoteric knowledge from a genius who employs the latest and greatest fad…
Guess what? It doesn’t…..
When it comes to golf performance here’s what the science says:
Results suggest that core strength and stability, flexibility, balance, and peripheral muscle strength are correlated with golf performance and should be included in golf training programs.”- Wells, Physiological Correlates of Golf Performance
Yeah, so ummm basically you need everything….except stupid human tricks…

Zombies and Diets: Both eat your Brain

Seriously they do….

Zombies: Zombie Nutritionist Recommends All- Brain Diet

“Our research indicates that live human brains are not merely the cornerstone of a healthy diet; they are, in fact, the only food an active adult zombie should consume at all,” -Rossum

Diets: Why Diets Don’t Work: Starved Brain Cells Eat Themselves, Study Finds.

“When we don’t eat, hunger-inducing neurons in the brain start eating bits of themselves. The act of self-cannibalism turns up a hunger signal to prompt eating. “- Science Daily

Empirically proven: Diets are as dangerous as Zombies…..take that Atkins!
